MooCall calving sensor – the farmer’s story

Elena Lazzarini tells us why, among all the devices available, she has chosen the MooCall calving sensor for over 6 years, without missing a single calving.

A breeder of Piedmontese cattle at the Mario e Martini di Lazzarini farm in Fontanella (BG), Elena Lazzarini was one of the first entrepreneurs in Italy to purchase the MooCall calving sensor—and she certainly has no regrets.

The drive to look for this device was dictated by the type of farm, as Elena follows the cow–calf system, where income is entirely centered on calving; therefore, losing even a single calving means losing revenue.

“I was looking for an alternative to staying in the barn 24 hours a day for fear of missing a calving.”

So, after careful research and also comparing other solutions on the market, the farmer discovered the MooCall calving sensor.

How does the MooCall calving sensor work?

The device is positioned at the base of the cow’s or heifer’s tail, at vulva level, and detects the animal’s contractions.

After one hour of constant and intense activity, the system sends an alert to the farmer via SMS, email, or through a notification on the free MooCall Breeders app.

A second message is sent after two hours of regular contractions, providing additional confirmation of the timing of calving.

Why is it better than other devices on the market?

“After the first year of using the MooCall calving sensor, I have never deactivated the service because I have never missed a calving.”

Elena immediately makes it clear why she can no longer do without the device, but there are several other reasons that helped her make this choice:

“Among its features, the most important is that it is not invasive for the animal; if positioned correctly, the cow does not even notice it. It is also easy to use. It is convenient because it alerts you and gives you plenty of time to get ready; usually, after 1 hour to 1 hour and a half, calving occurs. When the second alert arrives, you know that calving is imminent.”

One final testimony from Elena clearly explains why the MooCall calving sensor is also an investment from an economic point of view:

“Some years ago, I experienced a breech birth without the water breaking; if I had not had the MooCall calving sensor, I would have lost both the calf and the cow, because I would never have realized that the animal was about to calve. From an economic point of view, even saving just one calf is enough to repay the investment.”

These words clearly show how the device is a great help for the farmer, allowing them to sleep peacefully without the anxiety of constantly having to monitor calvings.
