Heat Stress in Swine
HEAT STRESS IN SWINE AND NUTRITION
Maintaining the physiological and oxidative balance of your pigs through animal nutrition
During the production cycle, animals are continuously exposed to stressful events: temperature fluctuations, feed changes, vaccinations, treatments, and many other stressors that compromise animal welfare and, consequently, productivity.
The effect of heat stress in swine consists of a series of complex, interconnected responses that often result in a general reduction of the animal’s immune defenses. This occurs because activation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis increases cortisol production, which has an immunosuppressive role.
Further worsening the overall impact of stress is the increased production of ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species), commonly known as free radicals.
The animal organism is equipped with systems capable of preventing these metabolic by-products from predisposing cells to oxidative damage; however, under stress conditions, the excessive production of ROS overwhelms these antioxidant systems, eventually leading to cell death.
Preserving animal health is a priority in the swine industry, and one possible approach to counteracting heat stress in pigs is to modulate its effects when it cannot be avoided.
Several studies show that extracts from certain plants can help reduce the effects of heat stress in swine thanks to the action of their active compounds.
Salicylic acid contained in some plants, for example, after acetylation, can help modulate inflammatory processes, while lignins, once hydrolyzed, can modulate antioxidant processes.
NORMOTERM is a plant-based product and plant-derivative formulation designed to support the physiological and oxidative balance of the organism.
It is available in both powder and liquid forms. It is available in both powder and liquid forms: the powder version is enriched with vitamin C, the liquid version is enriched with vitamin PP (niacin).
Both vitamins enhance the antioxidant activity of the natural components contained in the products and are involved in various metabolic processes.
NORMOTERM ORAC is a product similar to the previous ones but enriched with plant-derived polyphenols to further enhance its antioxidant effect.
Several studies recognize the strong antioxidant action of polyphenols, and some authors report greater efficiency of these molecules compared to common antioxidants used in animal nutrition, such as vitamin C and vitamin E.
