Calf: the advice of the Tecnozoo veterinarian
For a healthy feeding of the calf:
the advice of the Tecnozoo veterinarian
Every good breeder knows that the first stages of life are fundamental for the animal’s well-being and for the production of the future dairy cow.
At Tecnozoo, we believe that an optimal weaning path does not start at birth, but from the last month of gestation to the transition to solid feeding.
Furthermore, it should be remembered that the stomach of the newborn calf is not comparable to that of an adult: in the first stage of life, in fact, the animal’s digestive system is comparable to that of a monogastric. At this moment, digestion and nutrient absorption by the calf are allowed only and exclusively by gastric and pancreatic secretions.
Only in the subsequent stage will the animal’s rumen become active.
At this stage, it is recommended not to administer hay to the calf, as there is a risk of forming hay balls that curdle in the animal’s stomach, with the consequent slowing of concentrate intake and rumen development.
