Several studies on natural phytocompounds, such as polyphenols and salicylates, have clearly demonstrated their effectiveness on animal metabolism. They act as antioxidants—thereby preventing cellular damage caused by lipid peroxidation of cell membranes—and help mitigate inflammatory conditions.
Spiraea ulmaria
Main constituents: flavonoid glycosides, phenolic glycosides, salicylaldehyde, polyphenols.
Main indications: inflammatory conditions, fluid retention, and edema formation. The plant has traditionally been used for the symptomatic treatment of joint pain, febrile conditions, and flu-like states. In addition to salicylates, meadowsweet contains flavonoids (0.5%), vitamin C, and tannins.
Salix alba
Main constituents: phenolic glycosides, salicylic acid, flavonoids, tannins.
Main indications: febrile and inflammatory conditions, rheumatic and arthritic pain. Salicylic acid was first extracted from the bark of white willow. This substance is produced by plants as a defense against chemical, physical, and biological stressors and acts as an anti-inflammatory compound, useful in various febrile conditions as a mild analgesic.
