Managing the Calf Unit: Some Practical Advice
The first stages of a calf’s life are fundamental for its welfare and, consequently, for the milk production of the future dairy cow.
For this reason, Tecnozoo firmly believes that the weaning phase is the period that starts from the last month of the cow’s pregnancy—with vaccination against Rota and Coronavirus and Colibacillosis and a well-balanced ration—and continues until the moment when the calf is able to feed exclusively on solid feed.

The gastrointestinal system of a calf is not the same as that of an adult animal; in fact, during the so-called Neonatal Phase (approximately up to the 35th day of life), the calf’s digestive system can be compared to that of a MONOGASTRIC animal. Digestion and nutrient absorption depend almost exclusively on GASTROINTESTINAL AND PANCREATIC SECRETIONS (the rumen has no function at this stage).
The calf’s ABOMASUM accounts for about 70% of the stomach compartments, unlike the rumen, which is still very small.
