Acting on specific cells in bone, kidney, and intestine, PTH promotes an increase in serum calcium concentration. Specifically, PTH stimulates: <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">1) Bone level: demineralization and release of calcium and phosphorus through osteoclast activation;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">2) Renal level: calcium reabsorption and phosphorus excretion;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">3) Intestinal level: increased calcium absorption.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These effects of PTH, together with those of vitamin D\u2083, occur only if PTH receptors are correctly configured\u2014a condition ensured by physiological blood pH and impaired under metabolic alkalosis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-disegno.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18040\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-disegno-1024x797.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"429\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-disegno-1024x797.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-disegno-600x467.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-disegno-300x233.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-disegno-768x597.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-disegno.jpg 1081w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 429px) 100vw, 429px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Likewise, full hepatic efficiency is essential for vitamin D hydroxylation and activation. Adequate magnesemia is also critical, as magnesium is involved both in adenylate cyclase activation and in the synthesis of 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-vacca.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18047\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-vacca-1024x615.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"683\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-vacca-1024x615.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-vacca-600x360.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-vacca-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-vacca-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-vacca.jpg 1451w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This highlights the importance of monitoring the mineral profile of the transition cow diet, with particular attention to potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg) levels, in order to achieve a DCAD close to neutrality (thus avoiding alkalosis) and to ensure appropriate Mg availability relative to K, given their direct competition for absorption at the ruminal level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Equally important is preserving optimal liver function during the transition period, since hepatic hydroxylation activates vitamin D in its endocrine form. This can be supported through the use of lipotropic and hepatoprotective factors (such as choline, methionine, and carnitine). Notably, a close correlation exists between blood calcium levels and NEFA concentrations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-tabella-lattazione.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18033\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-tabella-lattazione-1024x487.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"553\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-tabella-lattazione-1024x487.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-tabella-lattazione-600x286.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-tabella-lattazione-300x143.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-tabella-lattazione-768x366.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tecnozoo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ipocalcemia-tabella-lattazione.jpg 1107w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 553px) 100vw, 553px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Calcium supplementation at calving: why, how, which form, and how much?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As noted, even under optimal conditions, calving induces a transient, physiological hypocalcemia, which homeostatic mechanisms attempt to counteract.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Calcium administration at calving is therefore extremely useful in supporting the body\u2019s homeostatic mechanisms to achieve a rapid restoration of normal blood calcium levels.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Excluding cases of severe clinical hypocalcemia\u2014where extremely low blood calcium levels require intravenous administration\u2014oral supplementation is not only advisable but preferable in subclinical hypocalcemia. Oral administration avoids the risk of transient iatrogenic hypercalcemia, which is metabolically stressful and may pose cardiac risks. Furthermore, oral supplementation provides more stable post-absorptive blood calcium levels over time and integrates better with endogenous calcium homeostasis. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Passive calcium absorption\u2014unlike active absorption\u2014does not require vitamin D\u2083 and relies on the concentration gradient between intestinal lumen and blood. This gradient is achieved only with highly soluble and bioavailable calcium sources, which are therefore recommended for supplementation. Examples include calcium chloride or sulfate, organic sources such as calcium acetate or lactate, or calcium pidolate (highly effective, though more costly).<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In contrast, calcium carbonate, despite being inexpensive and more palatable than calcium chloride, is poorly soluble and therefore unsuitable for oral supplementation aimed at rapid calcium absorption.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The recommended amount of calcium to be supplemented\u2014using highly soluble and available sources\u2014is approximately 100 g of elemental calcium. Provided solubility is not compromised, the form of administration (bolus, gel, liquid) does not significantly affect treatment efficacy. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>That said, liquid formulations are generally more economical, highly effective, and carry minimal risk of ab ingestis.
